Medusa ransomware first emerged in June 2021 and has rapidly evolved into a significant threat, intensifying its operations in February 2023 with the launch of a dedicated data leak site on the dark web. Increasingly prolific, Medusa is an active threat that has orchestrated several high-profile attacks on major corporations in the US. Utilising the Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, Medusa collaborates with global affiliates to amplify the impact of its ransomware attacks.
Known for its complex assaults, each file encrypted by the Medusa ransomware displays various extensions, with ".MEDUSA" serving as a distinct identifier. Utilising double extortion methods to both encrypt and steal data, the group typically spreads its brand of malware through phishing emails, however they have also been known to leverage the support of initial access brokers for infiltration support. Once access has been gained, the group looks for public-facing systems such as Microsoft Exchange that have unpatched vulnerabilities, prime for exploitation.
Double extortion is a nefarious tactic used by Medusa to amplify the impact and urgency of their demands. In a double extortion scheme, the perpetrators not only encrypt the data but also threaten to release or sell it if their ransom demands are not met.
